Welcoming Your New Puppy or Kitten

We’ve Got You Covered

There’s nothing quite like the joy of a new puppy or kitten joining your family. They’re cute, curious, and ready to explore the world—and like all babies, they need a little extra care and guidance to help them thrive. Whether you’re a first-time pet owner or it’s been years since you’ve cared for a young pet, the team at Brewster Veterinary Hospital is here to make this experience as smooth and exciting as possible.

Your Partner in Puppy & Kitten Care

From the moment your new furry friend becomes part of your family, we’re here to provide support, advice, and top-notch care. Their first visit with us is an important milestone—it’s where we’ll get to know them, celebrate their arrival, and set the foundation for their lifelong health. You’ll also have the chance to ask any “so, now what?” questions that come with being a new pet parent.

We know those early days can feel a bit overwhelming, but you don’t have to navigate them alone. From puppy and kitten basics to more nuanced concerns, we’ll guide you every step of the way.

The First Year: Why It’s So Important

Your pet’s first year is crucial for building a strong foundation for their health and well-being. Here’s what to expect:

Physical Examinations
Puppies and kittens need 3 to 4 exams between 8 and 16 weeks to monitor their growth and overall wellness.
Vaccinations
Frequent visits during their early months ensure that vaccines are spaced appropriately for their breed and lifestyle, providing the protection they need.
Diagnostic Testing
We’ll test puppies for heartworm (with a Heartworm & Tick Screen Test starting at 8 months of age), kittens for feline leukemia (FeLV) and FIV, and perform fecal testing to rule out parasites—ensuring they’re off to a healthy start.
Spay/Neuter and Microchipping
We’ll discuss the best time for these essential procedures, helping to prevent future health and safety concerns.
Socialization
A well-socialized pet is a confident, happy pet. We’ll share tips and advice to help your puppy or kitten feel comfortable in all kinds of environments.
